From the press release:
Columbia Records is proud to announce that Coheed and Cambria will be supporting Linkin Park on all dates of their upcoming national tour. the tour goes from February 12 to March 10 and will be hitting 19 cities, including Madison Square Garden in New York. the dates come on the heels of Coheed’s successful sold-out 25-date national headlining tour that wrapped at New York City’s Roseland Ballroom on November 29, 2007.
Coheed and Cambria (Sanchez – vocals, guitar; Travis Stever – guitar; Mic Todd – bass) spent the first half of 2007 working on “no World for Tomorrow in Los Angeles with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, rush, Stone Sour) and mixer Randy Staub (Metallica, Nickelback). Coheed recruited Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters to play drums on the record, while ex-Dillinger Escape Plan drummer Chris Pennie is now a permanent fixture in the band and has taken their live shows to new heights.
No World For Tomorrow has sold over 100,000 copies in four weeks, and the Linkin Park dates mark the first time the band has played in arenas.

I don’t know how impressed I am with Coheed & Cambria. As far as their support of Linkin Park? weird. I’d have thought they’d been better off supporting the Killers. both guys have weird voices.

It’s been a big week for farewells.
First came the exit Wednesday of Marg Helgenberger and her character, Catherine Willows, from “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”
Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger, left) hugs Captain Jim Brass as other CSI members including D.B. Russell (Ted Danson, left), Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) and Greg Sanders (Eric Szmanda) look on in her last episode on “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” MONTY BRINTON, CBS ADVERTISEMENT
“CSI” hasn’t produced much in the way of compelling TV for at least five years, but once upon a time it deserved the attention that made it TV’s top-rated drama for several years (and the no. 1 overall show in 2002-03).
Willows was a big part of its early success, the earthy, self-made counterpart to William Petersen’s aloof, over-educated Gil Grissom. but as the years wore on, the series lost its focus, and Catherine became less and less believable, until she was practically an action hero.
Elisabeth Shue arrives Feb. 15 as Helgenberger’s replacement. With any luck, she’ll be as salutary to the show as Ted Danson has been in replacing Laurence Fishburne.
Tonight brings us the final episode of “Chuck,” which never achieved the ratings heights that “CSI” did – or anywhere near it. instead, “Chuck” built a small but fanatical following that hoped their favorite show wouldn’t be cancelled after each of its five seasons.
The combination of spy thriller and comedy worked well – although to the Watcher it got redundant after the first two seasons. Still, it’s good to see “Chuck” being able to check out on its own terms and give its fans a genuine ending.
‘RACE’ CAST
As the Watcher warned you a while back, Brenchel, aka engaged “Big Brother” couple Brendon Villegas and Rachel Reilly, will lead the cast of the 20th edition of “The amazing Race.”
CBS gave us the names of the 10 other teams that will accompany last summer’s “BB” winner/whiner Rachel and her swain on their trip around the world. the list includes a set of married clowns, five racers in law enforcement or the military, and two professional athletes.
Brendan and Rachel are the latest in a line of veterans of other CBS reality shows to make the “TAR” trek. “Survivor” couple Rob & Amber Mariano ran twice, and Ethan Zohn & Jenna Morasca raced last season. “Big Brother” has had three previous Racers: Jeff Schroeder & Jordan Lloyd ran together in season 16, and Alison Irwin raced in season five.
Season 20 begins Feb. 19. for the full list of teams, see the Watcher’s blog at pedrowatcher.ocregister.com.
‘IDOL’ SLIPS
The ratings for “American Idol” continue their downward trend this season. Wednesday’s audition episode drew fewer than 20 million viewers and was down about 30 percent from the comparable episode in 2011.
This comes even though CBS and ABC have cleared the decks for “Idol” by putting up reruns against it the past couple of weeks.
There are probably a few factors working into the slide.
First, the excitement created by new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez gave last season an early boost that isn’t there this year.
Second, the talent hasn’t generated much buzz this year. no one stands out as an early favorite the way Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Casey Abrams did.
Third, nearly every show’s ratings decline as it ages, and TV ratings in general are sagging as the number of channels expands and more viewers turn to the Internet.
OUT OF ‘LUCK’
Folks who tuned into the special preview of the pilot of HBO’s new drama “Luck” will not be happy about the season premiere Sunday. instead of putting on two episodes, HBO is only replaying the pilot. So if you saw it back in December, you will need to wait until Feb. 5 to find something new.
Of course, it might be worth watching again. the pilot is light on setup, making it a bit hard to follow. the series – which stars Dustin Hoffman – might turn out to be quite good, but it’s going to take some getting used to.
What the Watcher is watching this week.
1. “American Idol” (Fox, Wed.-Thu.) – more auditions
2. “Luck” (HBO, Sunday) – the official start
3. “Chuck” (NBC, Friday) – Two-hour farewell
4. “Masterpiece Classic” (PBS, Sunday) – “Downton Abbey,” part 4
5. “Top Chef” (Bravo, Wednesday) – the final five
6. “Alcatraz” (Fox, Monday) – a bank robber reappears
7. “Justified” (FX, Tuesday) – Boyd meets Ellstin
8. “Nova” (PBS, Wednesday) – An Ice Age treasure trove
9. “Project Runway All Stars” (Lifetime, Thursday) – Clothes off their backs
10. “The Office” (NBC, Thursday) – Angela gives birth

Still, despite the dropoff, the total audience for “Idol” was huge, and dwarfs the numbers Cowell’s “X Factor” averaged on Fox earlier this season.
Indeed, “Idol’s” return easily beat all competitors on the night and will likely finish the week as the top-rated nonsports show.
CBS’ “NCIS,” the only real challenger for that title, averaged 21.03 million viewers.
What’s not known, as cited in Variety by columnist Brian Lowry, is what impact Fox launching “X Factor” may have had — and will have — on the overall run of “American Idol.”
there have been a ton of talent shows on the air, he notes, all of which can eat at the giant. but Fox’s “X Factor,” aimed at the “Idol” audience, represents a greater threat.
“Of course, even with a significant decline ‘Idol’ remains a juggernaut,” Lowry wrote. “But nothing stays airborne forever. and if ‘X Factor’ hastens ‘Idol’s’ descent back to the ratings orbit of mere mortals, Fox might wind up regretting the day it agreed to ‘X Factor’ after resisting the temptation to do two editions of ‘Idol’ a season.”

“American Idol” didn’t exactly have its most memorable audition episode during a special Sunday-night airing from San Diego. But a UC Berkeley student did manage to make quite an impression — and not in a William Hung sort of way.
Kyle Crews, a 19-year-old flirtatious frat boy from Cal, wowed the judges with a soulful cover of Monica’s “Angel of Mine.” The performance was good enough to prompt judge Steven Tyler to dub Crews as “the best male voice we’ve heard so far.”
But Crews, a San Diego resident, was much more interested in pleasing judge Jennifer Lopez. He dedicated the song to J. Lo and her “voluptuous lips.”
Crews, one of seven golden ticket recipients featured during the show, received plenty of quality air time as “Idol” cameras followed him around the Cal campus — in front of Sather Gate, around the book store and with his frat buddies at Kappa Alpha. inside the frat house, he was seen doing what he apparently does best — “serenading lovely ladies.”
All the good “Go Bears” vibes were almost enough to erase the bitter memories of UC Berkeley’s previous big showing on “Idol.” That came in 2004, when Cal engineering student William Hung turned into an accidental star with his horrid audition cover of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs.” it was so bad — and so comical — that Hung became a short-lived Internet sensation.
Crews, of course, is hopes to have a longer lasting impact on “Idol.” But first, he’ll have to take the judges’ advice and lose the hideous plaid shirt that he rocked during the audition.
Also making the Hollywood cut Sunday night was Jason “Wolf” Hamlin, a mechanic from Livermore.
Wolf, 24, specializes in country singing — a genre that dominated the show last season. He impressed the judges in the final audition of the night, performing “Midnight Special” and “Folsom Prison Blues,” the latter with what he calls his “git-fiddle” (a guitar).

The Channel 9 viewing area has had more than its fair share of spotlight-stealing moments in 2011. We’ve flooded the airwaves from FOX’s American Idol to ABC’s Wheel of Fortune.
We’ve been sure to keep up with nearly all of our hometown viewers turned hollywood stars. As we look back at 2011, we can only hope that 2012 will be just as entertaining.
From Rossville’s Lauren Alaina, to Dalton’s J.R. Martinez and Fort Oglethorpe’s Patrick Sharrock, the NewsChannel 9 viewing area had a major year in reality television. it started in February with the big announcement that ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was coming to town. but it wasn’t until the show aired in May, that the world fell in love with Patrick Sharrock – the little boy with a big personality, living with brittle bone disease.
And then came Lauren Alaina – the 15-year-old Rossville native with a voice that earned her the runner-up spot on American Idol. Alaina’s debut album Wildflower sold nearly 70-thousand copies in its first week on shelves.
From the concert stage to the dancefloor we went, when JR Martinez captured the nation with his story of heroism and sacrifice, not to mention his daring dance moves. JR’s, Lauren’s and Patrick’s journey through hollywood was not only entertaining to watch, but it encouraged others to persevere through whatever life throws at you.
JR was recently deemed the grand marshall for the January 2nd tournament of roses parade. He’ll also be the guest in a parade a week from Saturday in Dalton at 1 o’clock. it was also recently announced that Lauren Alaina will be headlining Riverbend in 2012.

Wal-Mart Stores, inc. (WMT), with a view to strengthening its online business, has gone a step ahead with the announcement of the launch of ‘get on the Shelf,’ a kind of video contest where the winner can sell its product directly on Walmart.com and at Wal-Mart stores.
Akin to television shows like American Idol, Wal-Mart has started this ‘get on the Shelf’ initiative, where the company owners will not be obliged to face the buying regulations and can get a chance to launch their products at Wal-Mart, and thus reach out to millions of shoppers nationwide.
as announced by @WalmartLabs, the participating companies can choose any product from any category currently covered by Wal-Mart including housewares, electronics, toys or apparels. Subsequently, the companies can make a video of their products covering their new features and send them online to Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart already has 60 participants for this video contest with an array of different interesting products from the contestants like a new hot sauce, cube game, and iPad pillow. The videos of the products sent online will be initially screened by Wal-Mart and after the first round of public voting, 10 finalists will be selected.
after the second round of public voting process, Wal-Mart will determine the top three products, which will be sold on Walmart.com and at its stores. Wal-Mart will also feature the winners’ products on the home page of Walmart.com and will grant a good shelf space to the products in selected Wal-Mart stores across the country.
through this initiative, Wal-Mart will be able to discover some extraordinary products which might not have reached the markets due to some buying barriers. In addition, it will encourage its online business.
Wal-Mart, which is the sixth-largest Internet retailer, has been trying to build Global eCommerce for a year. It has also made investments in capabilities and talent, and has further strengthened its position through the acquisition of small Internet specialty companies. The company has been persistently pursuing its expansion plans in new markets such as China and Brazil, including a minority stake in Chinese Internet retailer Yihaodian.
moreover, Wal-Mart has initiated a new unit called @WalmartLabs, through which it will be able to augment its sales from the proliferation of smartphones and social networking. In addition, Wal-Mart acquired the Vudu streaming video service and technology company Kosmix, demonstrating its commitment to e-commerce and goal of offering customers a unique shopping experience.
Wal-Mart has now been expanding its online business, and has also started inducting the more experienced people of stores of U.S. in charge of the websites in those countries. In addition, Wal-Mart has e-commerce teams in developed markets of U.S., U.K., Canada and Japan, which will report directly to the senior store leadership in those countries.
Wal-Mart, which faces stiff competition from the likes of Target Corp. (TGT) and Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST), has a Zacks #3 Rank, implying a short-term Hold rating. Over the long-term, Wal-Mart has a Neutral recommendation on the stock.

THE SCREENING ROOM: Kelly Clarkson Sings “My Man” at Radio City, and Hopes for Broadway
By Adam Hetrick23 Jan 2012
"American Idol" season one winner Kelly Clarkson performed a sold-out concert at Radio City Music Hall Jan. 21 and brought a little bit of Broadway belting to her audience.
Clarkson told the crowd that, as part of her tour, she takes requests from fans in each city. since she was in New York, one fan suggested she sing a Broadway song, but they didn't name which song. Clarkson seemed delighted to have the chance to pick her own song.
the pop singer confessed she grew up performing in musicals, adding that she would love to do Broadway in the future. "I love Broadway musicals. I can't wait to be in a musical, I really want to be in one," she said.
"this might not be a very well-known [song], but if you're a Broadway nerd like me, then it will be," Clarkson said, before asking, "does anyone like Funny Girl?" the audience erupted in cheers. she told the audience that Funny Girl was one of her favorite shows and that she was a huge Barbra Streisand fan; Clarkson noted that the two also share a birthday.
Clarkson then performed "my Man," the signature Fanny Brice song that was not featured in the Broadway score of Funny Girl, but was included in the film.
Here's a look at Clarkson's Radio City moment:

(Credit:Michael Scott Slosar) (CBS) Life is a little different for James Durbin this January. Last year’s fourth place “American Idol” finalist is no longer belting out rock tunes on the “Idol” stage, but watching the TV competition from the comfort of his own Santa Cruz, Calif. home, with his new wife Heidi and their son Hunter.
Durbin told CBSNews.com that while tuning into the season premiere on Wednesday night he saw some familiar faces on the show: “Idol” hopefuls who auditioned in previous years, but didn’t make it.
“I know they keep people on the back burner … it’s a strategy, a great strategy,” Durbin told CBSNews.com.
Durbin knows the feeling. He first auditioned in 2008 before giving it another shot two years later when he made it on the show.
So what did he think about this year’s first auditions episode? “It was good,” he said. “There were some good singers on there.”
But the 23-year-old singer-songwriter probably won’t have time to catch every “American Idol” episode this season. The rocker recently released his debut album, “Memories of a Beautiful Disaster,” featuring the lead single “Love Me bad,” along with “Stand Up,” a song currently being showcased as an NFL stadium anthem.
“I don’t think I can be as invested this season as I put my family through last season,” said Durbin, who recently shot a music video for “Stand Up” and is already lining up 2012 tour dates.
Durbin, though, had some recommendations for this year’s contestants.
“Get as much sleep as you possibly can,” he said. “And just relax. Don’t overthink it. just stay true to who you are and be yourself. That’s the best thing you can possibly do.”
Good advice that stretches beyond the “American Idol” stage.

That Steven Tyler never was one to mince words.
While Jennifer Lopez is clearly the eye candy of the American Idol operation (sorry, Ryan), Tyler has the potential to be the spark plug.
During his first year on Idol, Steven proved he was an invaluable new member to the panel, offering off-the-cuff remarks and colorful adjectives describing his favorite contestants. His crazy antics and unpredictable comments sometimes left Fox and A.I. bosses at odds.
So imagine the surprise of Idol aficionados when the newly-engaged Aerosmith frontman managed to go an entire two-hours (dhock and awe) without giving the censors a coronary.
Well, unless you count the part where he hit on a teenage girl… in front of her father.
In one of the most cringeworthy moments from Wednesday night’s season premiere event in Savannah, Georgia, Steven caused jaws to drop when he delivered a peculiar compliment to Shannon Magrane, the 15-year-old daughter of ’80s St. Louis Cardinals pitcher, Joe Magrane.
Magrane is 6 feet tall, wears a size 11 shoe — and boasts vocal cords to match.
American Idol premiere: did the judges lose their mojo? >>
When Papa Joe asked the judges how they liked his hometown, the unfiltered Tyler blurted out: “Hot, humid and happening, just like your daughter.”
Oh Mylanta! did this 63-year-old rocker just make a sexually suggestive remark about a high school sophomore?
Why, yes, he did.
Daddy didn’t look very happy. but that’s Steven for you!
Steven Tyler is getting hitched — and his peeps aren’t happy >>
Add the barb to Tyler’s lengthy list of memorable on-air infractions.
The “Dream On” rocker danced himself into Hot Water with Idol bosses last year, when he jokingly pointed out the similarities between the F-word and a contestant with the last name “Muck.”
“You know what Muck rhymes with, don’t you?” Tyler asked.
“Duck?” the crooner replied.
“Read my lips,” Steve countered, mouthing the Grand Puba of the seven words you’re not allowed to say on television.
“American Idol would like to apologize for last week’s outrageous behavior by Steven Tyler,” read the so-called “black apology,” which crept across the screen during the next segment. “Mr. Tyler has been warned and assures us it will never happen again.”
So much for that vow!
While Steven’s loose lips may be making a relatively slow transition, things are looking mighty rosy in the other areas. last month, Tyler told Access Hollywood that his life has changed dramatically since he signed on to replace Simon Cowell on American Idol in August of 2010.
More specifically, he can no longer roam about and go unnoticed and his band’s album sales have gone through the roof.
“[Last season] it wasn’t really accepted up front [with the rock community], mostly from my own bandmates because they didn’t know what was going on with the Aerosmith thing at the end. but it’s brought younger kids to our music anyway,” he said, noting that the band’s sales shot up 260 percent in 2011.
“It’s like, ‘Really?… I can’t go anywhere anymore,’” Steven added.

American Idol fans in Kentucky have a new hometown contestant to follow and support.
Lauren Mink, of Winchester, got her ticket to Hollywood on the enormously popular singing competition Wednesday night, as judge Jennifer Lopez announced that Mink gave her “goosies,” or goosebumps, as she sang “Country Strong.”
Judge Randy Jackson told her he liked how her voice sounded similar too Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, who she said is one of her favorite bands.
Mink, 25, is the program director at STRIDE, an organization that serves adults with intellectual disabilities, in Winchester. The show featured a clip of Mink working at STRIDE.
Mink has performed at many venues in and around Lexington, including Merrick Inn, Murray’s, Desha’s Horse & Barrel Pub, Regatta Seafood Bar & Grill and Winchester Country Club.
